Environment - Mind - Body

what is the environment, mind, body triad?

HypnoBirthing sees childbirth as an interplay of three key parts: our surroundings, our mental state, and our physical body. Each one is connected, shaping our experience of pregnancy and birth in important ways.

the significance of our environment

When we talk about the environment in the context of HypnoBirthing, we’re referring to everything that surrounds us and how we take it in through our senses. This is not limited to the actual moment of childbirth. It includes the whole pregnancy journey, and even some of our early life experiences. The first years of life help shape our core beliefs, our sense of safety, and how we come to understand the world around us.

Understanding what has shaped our perceptions matters. It influences our behaviours, our expectations, and our ability to work with change. It’s also important to learn how to navigate the birthing environment itself, which often includes systems with their own routines, norms, and ways of doing things. The more we understand what we can control, what we can influence, and what we may need support to navigate, the better we can prepare for birth.

In short, context matters.

~ our mind = storehouse of experience

The mind acts as a storehouse of experience. It holds our memories, beliefs, values, expectations, and fears. You can think of the mind like the software of a computer - processing signals, making meaning, and running patterns in the background. It shapes how we interpret what is happening around us and within us, and that can have a powerful effect on how we experience birth.

~ the body = action centre

On the other hand, the body is the action centre. It is the part of us that responds, reacts, and carries things out. The body is constantly taking in cues from both the mind and the environment. Communication between the mind and body happens in a continuous feedback loop, influencing how we feel, how we cope, and how we move through the world.

~ the interplay between the environment - mind - and body

These three elements — environment, mind, and body — work together all the time. They are constantly communicating and affecting one another. As mammals, we are biologically equipped with built-in reflexes and processes designed to support survival and reproduction. In HypnoBirthing, we pay close attention to the relationship between these three parts so that we can reduce stress, work with fear differently, and support the body in doing what it is designed to do during childbirth.

Throughout the five-week HypnoBirthing Mongan Method program, we explore the environment surrounding birth and look at both past and present influences on our beliefs. We learn practical tools to help shift the atmosphere and create a more supportive space for birth. We also build mental tools that can create real changes in the body. By tuning into the body regularly and practicing new ways of responding, we can begin to lay down patterns that support a calmer, more positive birth experience.

So, the Environment, Mind, Body Triad is central to understanding the HypnoBirthing process. At the end of the day, you hold incredible power to shape your birth experience from the inside out! By recognizing the interplay between these elements, we can move through the birthing journey with more awareness, confidence, and steadiness.
